Jan 1, 2016 · Based on a request from fish farmers for lower-cost feeds, feed mills have developed a herbivorous feed with 15.5% crude protein and 10% crude fiber costing Thai Baht 8/kg (0.25USD/kg) for 5–6 mm pellets (Bujel et al., 2001). An emerging sector is the marine fish feed but production is relatively small, estimated at 20,000 tonnes in 2013.

Within 20 seconds of entering the pellet mill, feed goes from an air-dry (about 10-12 percent moisture) condition at ambient temperature, to 15-16 percent moisture at 80-90°C. During subsequent compression and extrusion through holes in a ring' die, friction further increases feed temperature to nearly 92°C.

The energy required to grind was lowest at 586 µm or coarser particle size. Air-swept pulverizers are usually used in shrimp pellet mills and produce fine grinds of 95 percent minus 250 μm. Fine-grind hammer mills can grind product to 90 to 95 percent minus 420 μm (Bortone, 2005) or at best 300 µm (Chamberlain and Bortone, 2006).
